Teacher
My greatest passion is teaching theatre. I have been referred to as a "process junkie," and relating my process and developing the processes of thinkers of any age is the most joyful experience in my life.
The first step in teaching acting is the development of a malleable process. The Michael Chekhov Acting Technique is truly a "teacher's method." Chekhov's Circle of Inspired Acting begins at any point in the circle, and students can discover the process starting at the point which they understand at a fundamental level. That understanding translates to the other points in the circle, and students who commit to the work will inevitably benefit from the entire process.
Whether a student naturally connects to feeling, thinking, or doing, Chekhov offers a starting point. Part of the beauty of the Chekhov work is that it offers individual tools that are useful to any student at any time - the entire technique need not be fully understood for the student to utilize a tool, whether it is learned over the course of an entire semester or learned in just a few minutes from a coaching session.
Because Chekhov offers a comprehensive vocabulary, it is easy to integrate other techniques into classwork, including Stanislavski's other students, Viewpoints, and even Suzuki. Other techniques can easily be broken down into Chekhov's vocabulary for more comprehensive study.
My teacher preached to my MFA class that "If you give 100% to the technique, the technique will give back 100%." I continue to teach this to my students, which is something that holds true in any field of study. Give 100% to what you do, and it will return to you.
