Teaching English as a Foreign Language

Shortly after finishing my undergraduate studies at Ohio State University, I was ready for an adventure. I had been touring with a children's theatre company, and meeting young students excited about seeing a play and learning about how to do it got me excited to take my teaching to students wherever I could.

I found myself on a plane to China to teach drama to students in Hong Kong.

I taught all levels of drama as a supplement to English programs there. Some were writing full length plays or performing poetry. Others had yet to learn simple vocabulary. Through drama, I was able to make a connection with all of these students.

The most exciting part of the work was discovering individual student goals. I had students interested in dance, illustration, theatre, math, music, and myriad other topics. Sharing the usefulness of English as a tool to help these young thinkers achieve their goals was exceptionally rewarding, and inspired me to later obtain a certification in Teaching English as a Foreign Language from the University of Toronto.

My experience in China allowed me to explore the region and expand my love for socio-cultural arts. I will pursue primary source cultural study for the rest of my life, whether it is through international teaching, travel, or cultural connections in my homeland.
